How It Works

Electronic Disconnecting Sway Bar

Disconnect the electronic sway bar for greater front suspension travel in off-road situations:

  • The Sway Bar switch is located on the instrument panel, to the right of the steering column under the transmission gear selector

To disconnect the sway bar:

  • Shift to either 4HI or 4LO and push the switch
  • The indicator light in the instrument cluster comes on when it disconnects
  • The light will flash until it’s disconnected or if activation conditions are not met
  • To return to on-road mode, push the Sway Bar switch again

The sway bar provides stability and maintains control of the vehicle:

  • Keep it connected during normal on-road driving.
  • Do not disconnect the sway bar and drive on hard-surfaced roads or at speeds above 18 mph (29 km/h) or you could lose control of the vehicle, which can result in serious injury

Axle Lock

The axle lock system allows the front and rear differentials to mechanically lock the axle shafts together, forcing the wheels to spin at an equal rate:

  • This improves handling in low-speed, extreme off-road situations where one wheel is likely not to be in contact with the ground
  • The Axle Lock buttons are located to the left of the gear selector

To lock the rear axle:

  • Place the vehicle in 4LO
  • While driving at a speed less than 10 mph (16 km/h), press the Rear Lock button
  • Do not try to lock the rear axle if the vehicle is stuck and the tires are spinning. (This can damage drivetrain components)
  • Lock the rear axle BEFORE attempting situations or navigating terrain that may cause the vehicle to become stuck

To lock the front axle:

  • First lock the rear axle
  • Ensure the vehicle is in 4LO
  • Drive at a speed less than 10 mph (16 km/h)
  • Press the Front/Rear Lock button
  • The corresponding indicator light will remain on when one or more of the axles are locked
  • Do not use the locked axle position for normal driving or on hard surfaced roads. (Doing so will reduce steering ability, may result in a collision and could damage drivetrain components)
  • If the indicator light continues to flash after pressing either of the axle lock buttons, drive the vehicle in a turn to expedite the locking action
  • To unlock the front axle, push the Rear Lock button while in 4LO
  • To unlock the rear axle, push the Axle Unlock button
  • The corresponding indicator light will go out whenever an axle is unlocked

If the axles do not unlock after pressing the button, you may need to:

  • Drive slowly while turning the steering wheel from a left hand turn to a right hand turn
  • Drive in reverse for a short distance
